Suggestions Sought for Safe Trekking/Travel in NepalMountaineers / Trekkers In recent years over 20 people have gone missing or died while trekking in Nepal. There were some moves to make solo trekking illegal as many of these people were trekking alone. The legislation for this was not passed, so solo trekking is still legal, except for certified areas which require "Trekking Permits". The disappearances and deaths of these trekkers were put down to getting lost, wild animals, murder, falling, mental illness and altitude sickness to name a few. What safety suggestions would you put forward to travellers planning on trekking in Nepal? |

Methanol PoisoningDrink Tampering Methonol poisoning is a very serious issue facing tourists in Bali and other parts of Indonesia, with many people dying or being blinded by unsuspectingly drinking a cocktail or sprit laced with the poison. Frighteningly, this can happen after only one drink. People who are poisoned may not produce symptoms for up to 48 hours after consuming the poison and many mistake the symptoms as being that of a hangover. Other than not drinking alcohol the best ways to avoid being poisoned is to stick to local Bintang, imported beer or take your own spirits with you. Always be suspicious if a bar is giving away cocktails for free or at very cheap prices. |

Bali - Severe reactions to Henna TattoosDisease / Sickness There has been an alarming increase in reports of severe reactions to henna tattoos received by adults and children while holidaying in Bali. Apparently, the reaction is caused by para-phenylenediamine (PPD) a chemical found in boot polish, which is often disguised as henna by temporary tattoo artists in Bali. Most of the time the tattoo artists wouldn’t even realise the extent of the reaction, as there is often itching at first, but the full response can be delayed by up to 10 days. The reaction will look like a nasty chemical burn at the site of the tattoo and the rash can spread over the rest of the body. |

Super Typhoon Haiyan/YolandaExtreme Weather It is estimated that Typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) has killed more than 10,000 people in the Philippines! Coastal towns and cities popular with tourists are among the worst hit. 400 tourists stranded in Coron town in Palawan helped repack relief goods for the victims. Humbling to see travelers who have been affected, pitching in to assist filipinos in desperate need, having lost their families, homes, businesses and belongings. What else can we do to help? |
